Social Sciences - Education / Pedagogy / DEUG certificate
French term or phrase: Vice-rectorat
This is in a stamp at the bottom of a DEUG certificate from the University of French Polynesia.
The title of the person who signed next to the stamp is a Vice-Recteur.

This has come up in Kudoz before, but I don't agree with the suggested translations as personally I really don't feel that Vice should be translated by 'Vice' here.
For more information on the concept of a "Vice-académie" see http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vice-recteur_(France).
I'd like to be able to translate this using one or a couple of words, rather than having to add a more-or-less lengthy explanation.
I did think of 'Associate' but am not convinced by it.

Regional Education Authority (Overseas Division)
Explanation:
Or possibly Regional Education Authority (Overseas section)

I don't think there is a perfect translation, but I think this is an explanatory translation that could serve.

For Vice-Recteur, it could be either Head of REA (Overseas Division/Section)
or Inspector in charge of REA (Overseas Division/Section)

adjunct to the rector

Explanation:
Might adjunct work? It's commonly used in educational settings.

vice-rectorat

Explanation:
I think you should keep the original term. It is so specific.

However, as it would be a foreign word in an English text, then you need to keep it in italics.

neutral  Jennifer White: I really think this should be translated. This wouldn't look right in an English translation of a formal certificate.

-> There is an argument for translating it, but one has to be really careful not to confer a title above or below the one it actually represents. If pushed, I'd only "anglicize" the term : "vice-rectorate" in order to underline the specificity, but not more.

agree  philgoddard: Vice rectorate.

The university is headed by the President, who has authority over all the staffs. He determines the policy of the institution with the assistance of the Board. As the executive authority, he prepares and implements the multi-year contract with the French Ministry of Higher Education and concludes agreements and conventions on behalf of the university. He is the chief officer of revenue and expenditure for the university budget and responsible for maintaining order. He is elected for a four-year term by a majority of elected Board members.

Professor Eric Conte was elected President of the University of French Polynesia on June 23, 2011.

He is assisted by four vice-presidents

OK. In my experience stamps at the end of degree certificates are usually endorsed by vice-chancellors (or similar) of that university, not the education authority.

Well, of all those certificates I have translated, none had a signature of a "rectorat". Those on the right were invariably the signature of the secretary.

Note to reference poster
Asker: Your link refers to the University of French Polynesia itself, however the "Vice-Rectorat" signature part refers to the 'Rectorat' (which I normally translate as a 'regional education authority'). A vice-rectorat is not a fully-fledged 'rectorat' in its own right.

Asker: French diplomas generally have the signature of the 'titulaire' to the left, the University in the middle, and the 'Rectorat' on the right.

neutral  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: This touches upon the very difficulty of translating country-specific titles. Also, I think the system in FP changed in 2010 and the certificate goes back beyond that date. The EN rendering has to be contemporaneous with the original.
