Romanzo storico; una famiglia nobile e di buon nome è ormai caduta in disgrazia e le due figlie sono costrette a svolgere i lavori di casa, tra cui pulire, cucinare, mungere mucche e capre, cucire, fare il formaggio e il burro e occuparsi delle galline.

La frase dice sostanzialmente che la madre finge che le figlie giochino "at being dairymaid and hen girl and needlewoman".
Mi piacerebbe riuscire a esprimere il concetto di "hen girl" con una parola sola, risolvendo la frase con "giocavano a fare le casare e le *** e le sarte". Secondo voi esiste? Anche se la parola è desueta mi va bene, eventualmente vedo se nel contesto ci sta!
