When I say "the standard translation", of course there are some contexts where "medicine" would be more appropriate. But here it means drug.

neutral  B D Finch: Not for the UK, where drugs tend to be seen as either bad or fun, depending upon your point of view. More seriously, the "drug" is, I believe the active ingredient, not the whole product.

  -> You're confusing medical with recreational drugs, and the distinction is the same in the UK as in the rest of the world. And drugs can have multiple active and inactive ingredients.
