The name of the competition is used on many occasions in subtitles :

On vous attend à Bordeaux pour l'Euro 2016. Venez à Bordeaux pour l'Euro 2016 etc..

I have translated : We're expecting you in Bordeaux for Euro 2016.

My client has asked me to justify why I don't say "the Euro 2016". Having researched I have found rules about not using "the" before proper nouns any many English websites using "Euro 2016" but was wondering if anybody had a source to recommend to me for future reference.

Euro 2016 by itself is considered a proper noun, therefore no THE.
But if instead it is spelled out: European Football Championship, then there should be a THE => the [UEFA] European Football Championship, because this is a name composed of a common noun (Championship) plus a proper noun.

agree  Jennifer Levey: This is the standard practice when referring to these major sporting events (EUFA, FIFA, OG, etc) in English. Euro 2016 is a proper noun, unless it's being used to qualify another noun such as 'Championship'.

Send them to the UEFA website and point out the difference between when it's used as an adjective and when it's used as a noun. My question would be, shouldn't it be "UEFA Euro 2016".

agree  Charles Davis: I think the answer is that when UEFA refer to it they use the full form, to promote themselves, but others, except in the most formal contexts, just say Euro 2016. Same with the World Cup: who, apart from FIFA, calls it the FIFA World Cup?

  -> :) whilst I agree, the answer is nonetheless: me. In all the World Cup-related translations and work I did last year I always called it the FIFA World Cup the first time I mentioned it. Except for in subtitles, which is what we're talking about here.
