English term or phrase: counter of attack
...an opportunity for the Parts Counter person to "make the sale"

French translation:At the first point of contact
Explanation:
salespeople do often see themselves in a kind of "permanent war" against potential buyers, which does produce at times some weird wording, but still "Counter of Attack" sounds a bit over the top.

It could be a literal translation of or an allusion to "... d'attaque" i.e. the first point of contact [with potential customers]- by analogy with the "bord d'attaque" of an airplane wing - the first to be in contact with the incoming airflow.

Sorry, wrong language..

Au premier point de contact

(implied: what to do when you are the first point of contact with customers)

could fit in - these people working at the Parts Counter are for all practical purposes literally the "first point of contact" for customers when they walk in - be it new customers or the returning customers.

Asker: Thank you for the suggestion. But the clients would be repeat customers coming back to purchase other necessary equipment for their machinery. The Parts Counter person would try to sell not only the needed equipment (maybe steer them to a better brand) but others as well.

agree  Tony M: Yes, I don't see any problem with its being the first point of contact each time a customer walks into the store; I was thinking of something like 'at the leading / cutting edge'
1 day 5 hrs
-> yes, that's what I meant, surely not "the first time ever" for a repeat customer... OTOH 'at the leading / cutting edge' would certainly fit nicely for the kind of silly "motivational BS talk" you can be subjected to in some companies! Thanks!
