agree  Michele Fauble: I agree, though I prefer the synonym 'smother'. Don't understand the attempts to come up with other translations (and lose the author's imagery) for what is really a quite straightforward phrase.

drenched in blood

Explanation:
This is the most common expression I know.

Example sentence(s):
  • "...amidst their constant and laborious industry, for the defense of a country whose frontier was DRENCHED IN BLOOD, while its interior parts yielded all its little savings to your emolument." (Pg. 27)
  • "We never thought 100 people could die. We never thought that the main street of Kiev can be DRENCHED IN BLOOD "

neutral  Michele Fauble: Leaves the outcome indeterminate. //A revolt can be drenched in blood and still continue. Being "drenched in blood" does not mean dead.
19 hrs
  -> But "drenched in blood" usually implies the situation reached a fatal end when it is placed with the idea of a revolt/revolution/unrest etc. / I know what "drenched" means, but when used in this context this is what we are implying through usage.
