Spanish term or phrase: IC digestivo
Hi. I have a report about a 67-year-old man with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia who was admitted for severe sepsis (Giardia and Pseudomonas). Tests include a colonoscopy and gastroscopy and he is suffering from multifactorial diarrhoea. Under a section about his anti-infective treatment it says:

IC DIGESTIVO:
JC:

I think I stands for "Investigación" but am not sure about the C. You help is much appreciated!

interconsulta > referral to gastroenterology
Explanation:
I think this is likely. There's more than one thing IC can stand for but "interconsulta" fits the context, I think. It means getting an opinion from another specialism/speciality, in this case Digestivo, which must be short for Aparato Digestivo (or Medicina Digestiva).

Some refs:

http://www.imedicinas.com/pfw_files/cma/gdo_upload/m653/Inte...

http://www.revclinesp.es/es/congresos/xxxiv-congreso-naciona...

The usual term, despite dodgy refs to "interconsultation", is simply "referral". Two of our professional physician colleagues agree here:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/medical_general...

http://www.dep17.san.gva.es/index.php?option=com_content&vie...

"Digestive Medicine" is more naturally called Gastroenterology (GI) in English.

"Gastroenterology (MeSH heading) is a branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastroenterology

You'll find plenty of refs to IC + specialism, e.g. IC ORL (ENT), etc.

A pleasure :)

Just another one to show that "Digestivo" is normal usage for the name of a hospital service, and in this context:

"Los servicios médicos demandantes de interconsulta fueron:
Psiquiatría 13 (31%)
Digestivo 13 (31%)
Neurología 7 (18%)
Cardiología 3 (6%)
Neumología 2 (4.5%)
Oncología 2 (4.5%)
Otros 2 (4.5%)"

Asker: Thanks Tania but I'm not sure that really fits here as this is part of a general description and there is no percentage or value quoted in this section. If it helps, the paragraph headed "IC DIGESTIVO" comes between "TTO. ANTIFECCIOSO" which lists the medication the patient is taking and "ANAMNESIS".
