Of course "unionen" means the "European Union."

But my question is, how to translate this.

Does the writer mean only to say (i.e. to abbrev. it) "the Union," or would this properly be translated as "European Union" - even though "European" has not been included in the original.

Personally I would translate it to "EU," but my feeling is that if the writer wanted to say "EU," he would have. And therefor to be faithful to the text, the translation should read only "the Union."
