Calage / surcalage 12:02 Jan 21, 2015
Calage is assembly of the part on the wheelset by means of fitting (press-fitting or shrink-fitting, depending on whether this is cold fitting or hot fitting. Surcalage occurs when the end force fitting is exceeded, i.e., fitting for a higher tonnage than required, which causes stresses on the entire assembly and leads to early fatigue of the parts. This requires décalage, i.e., dismounting of the part and re-fitting, which is a very expensive and relatively lengthy procedure, or scrapping the wheel. After I carefully read (as best I could) basic documentation, including relevant European standards detailing wheelset processing faults, I was not able to identify this particular problem, so I actually called it "excessive force-fitting".
