Tech/Engineering - Automotive / Cars & Trucks / Description of vehicle
Spanish term or phrase: identidad independiente
The literal translation here doesn't really cut it. This is a press release about a vehicle, and they're trying to say that it's not simply a copy of other similar models on the market, but something different...

Here's the sentence it comes in:

"...lidera el desarrollo de una gama de vehículos con identidad independiente y alto nivel de calidad". (That should help you identify the vehicle!!)

Not feeling v inspired on a cold and frosty Monday mornings. All contributions gratefully received.

with a character / personality of its own

Explanation:
As I see it, "identidad" carries a certain suggestion of personification: to say that the car has an identity is to see it in some way as an entity rather than a machine. So I'd consider "character" or "personality"; the latter accentuates the idea more than the former, I'd say, and it depends how far you want to go in that direction.

Or "of their own"; after "a range of vehicles/cars" it seems more natural to make it plural, even though it is supposedly the range as a whole that has the "identidad" rather than the individual vehicles.

Check this out:

Personally, I don't find the language used very inspired, but hey!

agree  philgoddard: I think that if there's an exact English equivalent you should use it. There's no point hunting for synonyms just for the sake of it, or because of your own personal preferences.

-> Not sure I entirely agree with that, but thanks anyway, Phil.

neutral  Yvonne Gallagher: a Chinese company so was this written in English or is it a translation?//I was referring to Phil's comment but anyway Noni said "The literal translation here doesn't really cut it" and I'd agree with that or with your own comment (not) "very inspired"

-> Yes, the same Chinese company that makes the vehicles referred to in the context posted by Noni. So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me. Whether it was translated from Chinese or not is anyone's guess, but the English seems fine to me.
