a figure of a naked swordsman holding a sword Explanation: IMO -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 mins (2015-01-06 21:06:29 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- The Naked Swordsman [Fontanna Szermierza] The Naked SwordsmanThe University of Wrocław presents plenty of superb photographic opportunities, but the most popular has to be the naked swordsman proudly standing at the entrance of the main building. The work of Hugo Lederer, the splendid sculpture was erected in 1904 and prompted complaints from parish priests that students would be morally corrupted by the statue's naked form. Early grumblings were countered by the legend that the statue represents an extravagant gambler who squandered all but his sword in drunken card games - thus serving as an example to the university’s 14,000 students. Town mayor, George Bender, agreed and the statue has stood ever since. http://www.inyourpocket.com/poland/wroclaw/sightseeing/Monum... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 12 mins (2015-01-06 21:07:03 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- the top of the fountain is a statue of a young, naked man holding a sword, made of bronze http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/Poland/West/Dolnosla... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2015-01-06 22:06:37 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- More precisely, the swordsman is holding an épée. ccccccc http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szpada Szpada – broń biała służąca wyłącznie do kłucia, powstała w XVII wieku na zachodzie Europy w wyniku przekształcania ówczesnego rapiera (białej broni kłującej). cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc The épée /ˈɛpeɪ/ is the modern derivative of the dueling sword, the small sword (itself descended from the rapier by way of the colichemarde), used in sport fencing.
