trim Explanation: I would go vague here. Finish and trim should cover just about everything - which is what they are trying to say anyway! |

covers/upholstery Explanation: At first, I thought of "piping", but a quick glance at the website below showed that it is upholstery or covers for furniture or accessories. Not the padding, just the top cover. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 17 mins (2015-01-06 10:47:18 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- The problem with "trim" as suggested by Terry, is that it is too broad and would include lots of things that are not "gainage". http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/What-Is-Car-Trim-/1000000017763522... "Car trim refers to the items that can be added to the exterior, and interior, of an automobile to increase its appeal. There are several types of car trim. Some are used to protect the car from unwanted damage that can be caused by surrounding vehicles in a parking lot, while others are simply for aesthetics. Consumers looking for car trim will be able to purchase items, such as special paint, protective add-ons, bumpers, and pinstriping." Sheathing Explanation: I've had this one before in the context of sellerie; sheathing is when the sewing is done so that you can't necessarily see the stitches, it looks like the leather is simply moulded around the buckle or whatever - very elegant! |

gainage Explanation: Terry may be right about staying general in this context, but I'm not sure trim and finish fully convey the meaning of gainage, in the sense of to cover/wrap something, and so it may also be a good option to leave it in or describe as below (i.e. "The French upholstery technique of gainage," etc.) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 17 mins (2015-01-06 10:47:42 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Maybe just "wrapping" could work in your context -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2015-01-06 15:51:42 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Actually... I think "cladding" may be a good fit here. A quick Google search for "leather cladding" reveals many aviation/nautical results. Example sentence(s):
