Il faut de la patience et une bonne vue de près. Parmi les différentes sortes de jours, le jour échelle est le plus simple. Il faut une toile dont le tissage est bien visible et pas trop serré : toile à drap, batiste, etc... Si la toile est très raide, à cause de l'apprêt, il faut la faire tremper une nuit dans l'eau froide. Choisir : - la hauteur du jour : on en déduit le nombre n de fils qu'il faut tirer - l'espacement entre les échelons : on en déduit le nombre N de fils que l'on regroupera à chaque point. Le plus souvent, N est inférieur ou égal à n.
