Portuguese term or phrase: superar
This word is used frequently in a text I am translating about Marxist propositions about society and how they xxxxxxx earlier ideas about how society and economics worked. I suggested " were better" but the author keeps wanting "overcome". One idea does not "overcome" another, does it? How about "supersede"? I seem to have a block on this one. Thank you.

agree  R. Alex Jenkins: Supersede. I also like "supplant", but this type of replacement is often associated with force, scheming or strategy.

surpass

Explanation:
I think "supplant" is good, but does not necessarily convey the idea of being better than what has been replaced. Hence my suggestion of surpass.
