diferir Explanation: DEFINITION of 'Roll Forward' To extend the expiration or maturity of an option or futures contract by closing the initial shorter-term contract and opening a new longer-term contract for the same underlying asset. A roll forward enables the trader to maintain the investment position beyond the initial expiration of the contract (since options and futures contracts have finite expiration dates) and is usually carried out shortly before expiration of the initial contract. Both legs of the roll forward are typically executed simultaneously, in order to reduce slippage (i.e. profit erosion) due to a change in the price of the underlying asset. |

Ver abajo. Explanation: En el ámbito de inversiones es muy común mantener el término en inglés por lo que se dice hacer un roll over o un roll forward. También se utiliza el término 'españolizado' hacer un rolo o rolar. Cuando dice roll spot to forward lo que dice es que está rolando, pasando la posición al siguiente vencimiento. Ahora que ya tenemos clara la diferencia entre precios del futuro y del contado (o spot), es el momento de comprender en qué consiste el rollover, desde una perspectiva teórica. La traducción literal de roll-over sería algo así como "rotar". Y es que llamamos así a la operación de cambiar (en realidad sería más apropiado decir "renovar") inmediatamente antes de su vencimiento – normalmente el mismo día, o el día anterior- un contrato con un vencimiento determinado por el siguiente en el tiempo. Esto nos permite mantener las posiciones más allá del vencimiento del contrato en el que entramos inicialmente. Especialmente útil es el roll-over en los contratos al final de los cuales se produce entrega física. Y es que siempre que al llegar a vencimiento no queramos ir a la entrega que supone la liquidación al vencimiento de algunos contratos, deberemos hacer el roll-over de esa posición.
