La baisse des teneurs en matière organique concerne également peu les sols forestiers. En France on estime que les sols sous forêt contiennent environ une fois et demi plus de carbone organique que les sols cultivés, et d’autant plus que le climat est froid (Meersmans et al., 2012a et b). Les risques de perte de matière organique (et donc de flux de CO2 associés vers l’atmosphère), proviennent principalement des changements d’usage (déforestation) et d’un effet éventuel du changement climatique (augmentation de la vitesse de minéralisation ou diminution des apports en C par la végétation), voire d’une intensification trop forte des prélèvements (branches, bois mort, etc.).
Si l’on raisonne globalement à l’échelle de la France, les sols forestiers sont actuellement un puits de carbone, principalement du fait de l’extension des surfaces des accrus et de la forêt.
