b. Importance of Avoiding Forced Cooling During Shutdown

Steam temperatures should be maintained at rated levels during steam turbine shutdown. Operating experience shows that forced cooling during shutdown can cause radial rubinduced vibration. Forced cooling during shutdown can also result in needless expenditure of turbine low cycle fatigue life.

An alarm is issued to the operator when HP or RH steam temperature decreases more than 25ºF (3.9ºC) during a shutdown. Action should immediately be taken by the operator to halt the forced cooling and return steam temperature to rated levels. Potential consequences of forced cooling include radial rub induced vibration, reduced turbine low cycle fatigue life, and, if the cooling rate and magnitude are severe enough, axial rubbing.

c. Transfer back to RH Only Flow Mode

During automatic shutdowns, the control system automatically initiates a transfer from HP Flow Mode back to RH Only Flow Mode.

d. Shutdown Conditions & Checks

1) Check that the Standby Bearing Oil Pump has a ready source of power and that the Control Switch is in the AUTO START position. A continuous supply of oil must be maintained throughout the shutdown process.

2) Verify that the excitation system is turned off below 95% speed.

3) Assure that the exciter AC regulator reduces the VARs to zero as the load decreases.

4) When the generated power reaches approximately 0%, the turbine will TRIP automatically. Allow the sequential tripping circuits or reverse power relay to open the generator breaker. This assures that there is no flow through the turbine when the electrical load is disconnected, thus preventing overspeed of the unit.

5) Verify all drain valves have opened.

6) Exhaust vacuum may be broken if the turbine speed is less than two-thirds of rated speed.

7) If the unit is equipped with a clash engagement type turning gear system, ensure that the rotor has been brought to a complete stop before engaging the turning gear.

For units with Koenig type turning gears, check that the turning gear has automatically engaged when the unit coasts through 100 RPM following shutdown. If the electric motor is not operational, the auxiliary air motor may be used to turn the rotor. Continuous slow roll using the air motor is not recommended unless absolutely necessary to avoid a rotor bow under emergency conditions.

8) In order to ensure that bearings are protected from exposure to potentially damaging temperatures, keep the bearing oil pump running after shutdown until: the HP & RH bowl upper metal temperatures are both below 500ºF (260ºC), the generator has been purged of hydrogen and depressurized, and the turning gear motor has been shut off.

9) Turn off the steam seal system. Condenser pressure must be near atmospheric pressure to turn off steam seals in order to prevent cool air from being drawn across hot turbine end packings.

10) Shut off the gland exhauster.

11) Shut down the hydraulic power unit.

12) Shut off the steam supply to the turbine and auxiliary equipment.
