My text is the Examination Regulations for a language exam which has two separate parts: "Die Mündliche Prüfung oder die Schriftliche Prüfung können innerhalb von sechs Monaten wiederholt bzw. nachgeholt und mit dem bereits bestandenen Prüfungsteil zu einem Gesamtergebnis zusammengeführt werden."

In January I already asked KudoZ how to translate "anrechnen lassen" which was part of the wording of a similar passage then: "Das Ergebnis einer bestandenen Teilprüfung (schriftlich oder mündlich) kann befristet auf eine Wiederholungsprüfung des nicht bestandenen Prüfungsteils angerechnet werden". This referred to candidates retaking an exam of which they had only passed one part; they were allowed to carry on the marks of the section they had passed.
Now we also have to cater for what happens if a candidate only takes one of the two parts of the exam the first time round. This may well happen e.g. because of illness, as the two parts are often on different days within a fortnight. So the candidate wants to "nachholen" the part they missed, not "wiederholen" the part they failed before. I can't think of how to express it clearly and succinctly! I found "nachholen" in the term search, but it was not applicable, I thought.

Resittting applies to the examination, not to the person.

An exam that has already taken place can be resat when it was missed due to circumstances that prevented the student attending - it does not infer that it is a "Wiederholung" or second chance after failure to pass.

Resitting an exam

You can usually resit an examination, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam.

With a valid reason for absence

If you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam, you may apply for a re-scheduled exam. Valid reasons for absence may be approved if you were ill before or during the exam or if you had other strong reasons for not sitting the exam.

Re-scheduled exams are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the regular exam. In courses where a regular exam is arranged each semester, the re-scheduled exam may be arranged at the same time as the next regular exam.

Contact the faculty's studies information centre if your faculty does not have its own information about postponed exams.
Without a valid reason for absence

If you have failed the regular exam or if you would like to obtain a better grade, you may resit the examination the next time a regular exam in the course is arranged.

In most courses at the university, you may sit an examination up to three times. You can not resit an examination if you have reached the maximum number of examination attempts.

Asker: Very interesting how you show that "resit" can also be used in the way I need it for"nachholen". However, it is perhaps asking a bit too much of my prospective readers to expect them to understand it like this. A pity, though!
