Multitran only gives "mastermind" and -- this is so typical of Multitran -- "meme wrangler." While I'm sure "mastermind" would work in some contexts, for me it still seems somewhat sinister. Can anyone think of another translation that might be better than "mastermind"? I'm drawing a blank. "The man behind..." is too general, and would sound redundant in the same sentence with "founder."

I think it's a pretty good equivalent here. "Architect" has a meaning of "the deviser, maker, or creator of anything" (Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary), "the person who has the idea for something such as a plan or policy and makes it happen" (MacMillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners), for example:

- the architects of the Constitution of the United States
- the great architect of the military victory
- He was one of the principal architects of the revolution.
- Jones was the architect of the team's first goal.
- He is the main / chief / principal architect of the country's foreign policy.
- She earned praise as the architect of a new school program.

etc.

Explanation:
... the company's founder and initial idea-man ...

Or, "main," "primary," etc. for "initial."

A variation might be:
