French term or phrase: essai de description
This is the name of a thesis on a diploma from Burundi. The full name is "Une etude comparative du systeme verbo-temporel du Kirundi et du Kiswahili: Essai de description morpho - semantique" This person got a degree in languages so this is the general field, but I don't know what an "essai de description" is.

I apologize for the lack of accents! Thanks.

English translation:(a) preliminary morpho-semantic description
Explanation:
After reflecting on this a bit, I think another possibility would be to use the word "preliminary" in the translation. This is one way to explicitly handle the meaning of "attempt" that's suggested by "essai."

Germaine alluded to this meaning earlier in the DBox, and here is an interesting entry from GDT:

essai
Domaine linguistique
Définition:
Ouvrage consacré à un sujet dont l'auteur estime n'avoir pas épuisé tous les aspects.

I'm still not sure what was meant, but I believe this is probably closest to the meaning. Thanks!

The typical "essay" is argumentative and not descriptive. That is why I prefer "description".
But one must be reminded that terms like "narrative", "essay", etc. may have different meanings according to the context.
