romandisle Romandiola Explanation: In the second half of the 6th Century, the Lombards conquered most of Northern and Central Italy. But they were unable to make any headway into the territory governed by the Byzantine Exarch of Ravenna protected as it was by his own troops and by the fleet moored at Ravenna. The wide valleys and the natural barrier of the Appennines, facilitated the defense of this "exarchal island". This remained the only territory in Italy distinguished by laws, customs and an agricultural, food system based on truly Roman and Mediterranean models. This "island" assumed the name "Romandiola" , which then became Romania and, later, Romagna. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 7 mins (2014-10-04 15:43:35 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "Saturn delights in the eastern quarter of the heaveus, and caufeth the eastern ...
