The cervical canal is dilated using a surgical instrument. Conization is the removal of the outer portion of cervix for treatment and diagnosis. The removal of the abnormal cells in the cervix can be done by surgical excision or laser destruction. If you are having abnormal bleeding a curettage or the surgical removal of the lining of the uterine wall is done at the time of the dilation and conization. This procedure is done to diagnose and/or treat the cause of abnormal vaginal bleeding and to remove any abnormal cells from the cervix.
