English term or phrase:are only expected to continue growing in the coming years
The Future Outlook for BRICS
Although discussed as a “bloc”, each of the BRICS countries is at different stages of development. China and India were the early movers, and ***are only expected to continue growing in the coming years***.
Wie versteht ihr diesen Satz? Hier meine Interpretation:
4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Yes, I revised my statement below, as you can see (including a reference).
Viewing "only expected to continue growing" as a positive statement would not justify "but", however, IMO. They were the early movers (very positive) and they will continue on their path (very positive as well).
PS: "But it can be omitted for style and emphasis, as Ramey says" - you meant "added", right? I was the one saying I don't like it :)
Well, I don’t think “only” is used here to describe or compare this growth, it is used to indicate that there is “only” one expectation: continuous growth. Without going into further detail. To me, the expression: “something is only expected to….” seems quite standard and natural in this sense.
Of course, we don’t know the ST author’s background, but I think every other possible meaning would have another, more natural way of saying it.
E.g. including an adjective to hint at mere growth: …and are expected to continue growing moderately in the coming years. Or to hint at a time limit: ….but this growth is only expected to continue for a few more years, or something like that.
I don’t think the comma changes the meaning. Technically, it doesn’t have to be there, two independent clauses with the same subject. But it can be omitted for style and emphasis, as Ramey says, setting the statement apart. In the words of the classic “Elements of Style” by Strunk and White: “When the connective is and, the comma should be omitted if the relation between the two statements is close and immediate.”
I don't like combining an ellipsis with a comma. We could probably debate now whether the second clause is actually an independent one and whether we're talking about a contrast (which I don't really see here if you refer to Gudrun's explanation).
I'm still kind of wondering whether the author placed "only" in the wrong spot. But we'll never know.

The comma

is vital to set the statement apart, making it more definite, which also indicates the positive intent of 'only'.
"but" would have been the better wording to express a limit. But if it says: and it is only expected to grow, I simply see that there is no other forecast than growth.

thanks for the roses, but my GERMAN writing is disastrous! I'm pretty confident about my English, though!

This is possible, too. Upon second reading, I can see the slant you're taking. The 'and' would actually have to be a 'but' if it were limiting the growth.
I am convinced that your writing is not sketchy, it's better than 90+ % of native Germans.

to their growth in the ST. the 'only' is decisive, but not to the extreme Olaf has indicated in his translation. I don't know if 'erwartungsgemäß' is appropriate here, but if it were, I would say 'erwartungsgemäß werden Ihr Wachstum nur die nächsten Jahren anhalten.' You all know my written German is sketchy, but it would be wrong to underestimate or overestimate the meaning of only here.

Explanation: this is how I understand it. And this time the grammar is correct!
