Medical - Medical (general) / Article about Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URI)
English term or phrase: Adjacent Structures
There is a sentence that says:

Prognosis for an URI
URIs cause people to spend time away from their usual daily activities, but alone, these infections rarely cause permanent illness or death. URIs may, however, serve as a gateway to infection of adjacent structures, resulting in the following infections (and others, as well):

Otitis media
Bronchitis
Bronchiolitis
Pneumonia
Sepsis
Meningitis
Intracranial abscess

I have a problem with the word STRUCTURES, I´m not sure if in this case it refers to VÍAS (RESPIRATORIAS), ÓRGANOS, ETC.

Any suggestion?

Thank you
