English term or phrase: have held themselves out as husband and wife in their community
Hello, I´m translating an affidavit and I´ve found the following phrase:

I hereby attest that I personally know them both and that they have been married to one another and have held themselves out as husband and wife in their community.

I don´t undertand the phrase THEY HAVE HELD THEMSELVES OUT AS HUSBAND AND WIFE IN THEIR COMMUNITY.

Any suggestion?

Thank you.

Spanish translation:se han presentado/mostrado como marido y mujer en su comunidad/entorno
Explanation:
Me parece que se refiere a ésto.
Saludos.

También podrías decir "se comportan como marido y mujer" aunque me parece menos ajustado al sentido del original.

agree  Tania Mingramm: Creo que no se refiere a como se comportan, si no a la imagen que dan a la comunidad.

  -> Thank you.
