Hi everyone!

I'm looking for an English (UK and/or US) equivalent for the German term "Fernsehredakteur" in the context of documentary films. This person is basically responsible for the entire film in terms of context and the final product and does all of the following: research about the topic in question, write the script, work as the director on location and eventually give instructions to the editor who puts all the different pieces of the film, music etc. together.

Any ideas?

There is often a very diffuse line between the producer and the director, depending on the degree of involvement in the production.

For instance, I worked on and off as a researcher for Derek Smith, producer (and director) of the Bewick Films documentary film for ITV/Tyne Tees TV "His Majesty's most loyal enemy aliens", about German artists interned on the Isle of Man during World War II.

If you had simply asked for Fernsehredakteur without the qualifier in brackets, I would heartily agree with your selection and Dr Read's answer and could have saved myself the research.

I knew the (then regional) TV industry in Manchester when Bill Grundy and Parkie were still at Granada, the Manchester ship canal was still in use and the Pie Factory was still making pies :-)

BTW: Bill Grundy was the first to get the Beatles on TV. In People and Places, broadcast from the Granada studios on Quay Street in Manchester.

@ Anke. I think your hesitation about producer is unfounded, tbh. For Hollywood films, yes, a producer is usually the person who sorts out the funding. But in TV, producer is the person responsible for the overall production. Based on the wider context you decide, I'd definitely go for 'television producer' rather than my other suggestion of documentary maker. This fits well for both people in full-time employment or independents. I have good experience in this field, as my office right in the heart of the UK TV industry!

is usually responsible for finding the funding but can also put the whole thing together, ie organise it all. In UKese, producer can/usually does(?) mean the same thing as director in USese.
Imo you can avoid all these pitfalls and stick with the suggested TV documentary filmmaker. /Or the not suggested TV documentary filmmaker?

The problem is that there is no real context - it's a testimonial on a website by this person, in the end it says Mr. XY, Fernsehredakteur.
He's not a freelancer, but has a full-time job at the TV company.
My problem with everything including the term "editor" is that there is already an "editor" in the TV setting, i.e. the one assembling all the pieces of the film, music etc. to create the final product.
The term "producer" to me always sounds like "someone who's responsible for funds".
Or is that just because I'm a German native speaker :-)?

In the US there are all kinds of producers and I don't think there is an equivalent. If you try to have your documentary financed one has to follow the rules of the PGA.

What you describe would be an independent documentary maker in the US!
