German term or phrase: Fernsehredakteur (documentary films)
Hi everyone!

I'm looking for an English (UK and/or US) equivalent for the German term "Fernsehredakteur" in the context of documentary films. This person is basically responsible for the entire film in terms of context and the final product and does all of the following: research about the topic in question, write the script, work as the director on location and eventually give instructions to the editor who puts all the different pieces of the film, music etc. together.

Any ideas?

There is often a very diffuse line between the producer and the director, depending on the degree of involvement in the production.

For instance, I worked on and off as a researcher for Derek Smith, producer (and director) of the Bewick Films documentary film for ITV/Tyne Tees TV "His Majesty's most loyal enemy aliens", about German artists interned on the Isle of Man during World War II.

You'll also see this with reference to documentaries. Lots of google hits and a standard industry term. Which of my two options you go for would depend on the context.

In view of the discussion below, and the wider context you give there, Anke, I am even more sure that this is correct. I would change my confidence level to 'highest' if I could. :-)

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Andrew, thanks for the term you suggested! I'll use it in the context I mentioned. And in case I want to stress the documentary aspect in a future translation, I'll go for the answer of Yorkshireman.

neutral  Yorkshireman: Have you actually worked in the industry? I try not to watch TV every day :-) Yesterday's 1-7 was an exception. I have worked in and for both radio and TV in Germany (NDR) and the UK (TyneTees, Bewick Films), as I mentioned in my answer.

-> No, but I watch TV every day, am surrounded by TV types at my place of work, and have a very good friend who's a TV producer. ;-) (And I was on the University Challenge team when it was filmed at the old Granada studios in Manchester!)
