no increase in taxes for a period of time Explanation: I believe this means that the government promises not to raise or to introduce any additional or new taxes for some period of time. For example, see: http://www.europe1.fr/Economie/Hollande-veut-une-pause-fisca... "Hollande veut une 'pause fiscale' François Hollande a demandé à ses ministres de ne pas augmenter les impôts l'an prochain." Thus, a "pause fiscale" isn't a tax break or a lowering of taxes, but it's also not a tax holiday (a period in which no taxes are to be paid at all). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_break https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_holiday It's a political promise not to raise taxes, somewhat reminiscent of George Bush Sr.'s (unkept) promise: "Read my lips: no new taxes" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Read_my_lips:_no_new_taxes |

taxes collected will stop rising Explanation: This may make sense, given what you might see I'm guessing from the discussion. However, I think the term can be used differently. It is not clear to me whether the term refers to the a) government not increasing tax rates or b) the rising amount of taxes collected will level off because of (whatever reason). |
