Exactly: that's why I'm going to refer back to the client. I can't give any more information as it's highly confidential, but I'm sure my client (who is in a senior role in an equivalent UK organisation) will either know or have access to someone who can explain these roles to him. I would have liked to give him a guide, but I think it will be better to leave the terms in the French and add a note. Many thanks for all your help.

You say that you are translating a chronology of an incident. What is your translation going to be used for? Who will be using it?

It is possible that the end user will be familiar with the organisation of the French sapeurs pompiers, even if not with the French language. If the reader is involved in e.g. assigning responsibility or ascertaining how well procedures were followed or whether procedures need to be reviewed, it is likely that they will require the document they read to be very precise and that they will be prepared to supplement the translated document with an organisation chart.

ce n'est pas un problème à priori. Donnez nous le texte mais le colonel supervise les 3 groupements quand il est de garde, il doit bien y avoir des offciers d'astreinte dans les casernes en plus.

La BSPP (Brigade des Sapeurs Pompiers de Paris) est commandée par un général. Elle est composée de 3 groupements commandés chacun par un colonel.
le colonel de garde est celui qui est en service quand les autres n'occupent pas leur poste.
Ce n'est pas un grade, c'est l'indication "on duty".
