Italian to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Italian term or phrase: Perito per gli apparati ed impianti marittimi
This qualification is equivalent to the 'Aspirante alla Direzione di Macchine di Navi Mercantili' and although a previous question has been asked for that title before, I can not find anything to confirm that their choice is correct (see http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/education_pedag...

I am translating this as part of a Certificato di Diploma but am struggling to understand if this is a cadetship or pre-cadetship - or simply what the equivalent is in English.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

marine equipment surveyor

Explanation:
A perito is a surveyor, and you can translate "apparati ed impianti" simply as "equipment". I don't know whether they also inspect the structure of the boat, in which case you could just say "marine surveyor", but I'd stick close to the Italian.

Looks like it's a degree subject, so marine equipment surveying.

Asker: Thanks Phil, this seems to be a senior high school (sixth-form) qualification (diploma). The qualification seems to have been previously known as 'Aspirante alla Direzione di Macchine di Navi Mercantili' for which the closest equivalent appears to be 'Merchant Navy Engineer Pre-Cadet' which seems to be the most appropriate choice, given my context. Thanks anyway.
