"my 'dear' friend the sheriff" would be very different. You lose the double diminutive of "Danny" and "boy". You lose his name entirely. You lose the song.

What you gain is sarcasm rather than real loathing.

Thank you all for your help. His name is in fact Daniel Luder, my bad. But anyway, him being addressed as Danny boy does not have anything to do with the way he is. In fact, so far he seems to be a pretty angry person (and he's not young at all). It's just that they hate each other. I was thinking that maybe I could change it completely and not say Danny or Daniel or anything like that, but to write something like my 'dear' friend the sheriff in a sarcastic way, but I don't know how good that would be.

No soy yo quien dice que se llama Luder, sino William en su comentario a mi respuesta, podés verlo allí.

Se que UrbanDictionary no es confiable en general, pero en este caso coincide con lo que yo conocía previamente, y con otras referencias similares de la web.

Creo que en este punto solo William puede aclarar las cosas, para que no sigamos dando palos a ciegas: hay que saber si Danny es el nombre o el apodo que le puso Gambke, si esto ocurre en USA, UK o Alemania, y si se rechazan, odian o desprecian, para saber que tipo de apodo sería equivalente en español (no es lo mismo "sherif modosito" que "sherif imbecil")

It would be a pity though to lose the reference to the song - it really gives an ironic contrast to the themes of the book.

I've tried some variations on Londonderry/LuderDanny but they all come across as very forced.

His name is Daniel and the familiar version of that is Danny - this can either be affectionate or not. Clearly here it's not affectionate. Both it and the "boy" and intended to diminish the recipient.

The song is also known as "The Londonderry Air" so its roots are Irish, but Protestant Ireland rather than Catholic Ireland. Gambke probably wouldn't know, and certainly wouldn't care, about the difference. He's using it, I think, just to add some generalized anti-religious tone.

The surname Luder doesn't sound at all Irish, more Germanic. Of course, he might have some Irish blood - one would have to read the book to know.

UrbanDictionary is notoriously unreliable - many of its entries seem to have been written by semi-literate, 12 year-old boys. I've never heard such a meaning. But, of course, it might exist in some circles.

Por tu respuesta en mi propuesta recién ahora entiendo que el nombre real es Luder y no Danny, así que la burla no está en "boy" sino en el apodo completo. Me inclino a pensar que lo desprecia por considerarlo un tipo demasiado correcto, perfecto, insoportablemente afectado, "empalagoso".

El problema es que fuera de USA nadie sabe nada de esto, y usar "Danny" no significará nada para nadie. Por eso no solo ninguna de nuestras respuestas va a servir, sino que va a ser confuso agregar el nombre Danny en este texto.

A partir de esto imagino que podrías usar "el Sherif Mequetrefe" o "el Sherif Yo-Soy-Perfecto"

O si habla sobre él. Podría hablarle a él y decirle algo como “Danielito”, que normalmente sería cariñoso, pero puede ser sarcástico, mostrando una hostilidad encubierta muy clara. (O “Danny, muchachito”... “Danny, jovenzuelo”) Ahora, si habla de él con otro: “el sheriff Danny, ese mocoso” “ese niñato” ... “el sheriff Danny-muchachito”... Algo de contexto de algunas de las oraciones en que usa “Danny Boy” tal vez pueda ayudar. Saludos.

Si, ese es el libro, pero en la historia hay dos Gambkes, la Detective, y su padre Cameron, y a éste es a quien me refiero. Lo único que he encontrado es esa canción, pues no es algo utilizado normalmente. Más bien quiere ser un poco despectivo, pero en realidad no hay un equivalente así que quiero encontrar algo que tenga la misma esencia. como decir Mi 'querido' amigo de una manera sarcástica.

Porque según lo que aquí dice Gambke es un detective, no el preso.
Puede estar haciendo un juego entre el nombre del Sheriff y la canción "Danny Boy" (según la trama el Sheriff es muy católico, entonces podría ser de origen irlandés, como la canción).
