Va a depender del contexto, pero creo que el original es un mal español y debería decir: leer tranquiliza a los niños; un niño se tranquiliza al leer. Está hablando de psicólogos infantiles que advierten eso, por lo que creo que se debe referir a la actividad de los niños, no a un tercero.
