English term or phrase: splintering cliffs
Let me explain, anything in this world can become a figure: in the
earthly realm, flowing waters, towering mountains, SPLINTERING CLIFFS,
peaks growing bare; in the celestial realm, the stars clustering around
the Great Bear and those scattered far and wide, the setting sun and
the moon brightening as it rises; in the human realm, a girl decking
her hair with a flower or the warrior brandishing his sword; in the
realm of the air, the passing winds and scudding clouds, the gathering
mists and lifting fogs; in the realm of living beings, the swan
winging across the sky or the pond-lily rocked by the water.
When we perceive these figures and internalise them, we transform
them into pregnant figures which we subsequently externalise
in various arts.

The road is paved, but still quite dangerous, narrow, with splintering cliffs above on one side, and chasms on the other.
