I think I have more or less exhaused my arguments. Everything hinges on the meaning of "solidário". I finalize by quoting the definition in Maria Chaves de Mello's Dicionário Jurídico: "qualidade do que pode ser integralmente satisfeito por qualquer dos coobrigados". It seems to me that "self-sufficient" is the only meaning that does not contradict "independentes", because that which is independent is not joint or mutually supporting. I rest my case!

I found a few more examples with barriers and sluices, and I have to change my mind regarding this term. Professor Martin is correct. All examples I found relate to parts that can do all the job if the other part is impaired. The example below is the most obvious one I found, as it relates to "barreiras solidárias" in a highway toll station. Toll booths may obviously absorb the job of a non-functioning booth (or more). Ok, you got a point too, I must admit. At first sight, the term "solidária" gives the impression of conjunction (supporting the other). But you're absolutely correct about taking 100% of the other part's duty. But we should check other examples of the term used in this area to make sure. I'll try to find some. Thank you.

Thank you for your comment! I don't agree that "solidárias" means they somehow act together, in this or in a legal context. To me, it means that they are independently responsible. In the legal sense, it means that any of the parties being demanded is responsible for 100% of the obligation. In the case of debt, the creditor can extract 100% from any of the debtor parties (but obviously not all of them). It's just a matter of which one he can extract it from first.

Transferring this concept to the question in point, I believe that it means that either barrier must resolve the problem of the leak in the well. It is a double guarantee against leakage. And this interpretation avoids, in fact complements, the concept of "independentes".

I see your point when you say "independentes" doesn't match "joint". However, "solidárias' in this cotext mean they somehow act together. Think of two concrete slabs. They are independent, yet bound to each other by an expansion joint. Maybe the suggestions are not accurate, yet, but I think Salvador is closer to the treasure.
