Any "slamming" of answers should be reported to the moderators, IMO. Anyone can have an off day and inexperienced translators won't be helped by such gratuitous attacks. Down with slamming ;-)

already made some effort of their own before posting the question, and also, quite naturally, don't want to waste time duplicating those efforts.

And I'm sure most Answerers don't slam Askers' efforts! Even if they don't agree with them, surely they normally do this without implying that any of them are stupid, or without being offensive in any way…

By your reasoning, conversely, nobody would dare post an answer for fear of being slammed by the Asker!

In theory I would definitely agree with the interest in sharing previous ideas.
In practice, I've seen countless examples in KudoZ of an asker sharing his/her previous idea(s), only to be slammed as stupid by answerers.
And that's why I decided (regretfully, since that's not the way I normally do things) to go in cognito several years ago.
Anyway, let's see if someone comes up with a better alternative to "road closure(s)."

I think you'll probably find that people are more willing to wade in and help you if you're prepared to share your previous ideas, and in particular, your reasons for discarding them. This is especially true in the case where the answer seems obvious - it leaves us wondering why you've discarded it and we are therefore unwilling to post anything that may seem stupidly obvious!

what is being closed off - is it "road closed", for example? Interdit de passage is often if you come at a one-way street the wrong way
