French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Music / Music venue
French term or phrase: à jauge variable
"L'espace [name of venue], actuellement en construction, offre un auditorium de 280 places à gauge variable d'une acoustique exceptionnelle, des écrans de projection, une Chapelle du Silence [...]"

I feel there might be a comma missing after "variable", and in that case I would be tempted to put "modular".

(The punctuation in the rest of the text is sometimes doubtful and harms the intended meaning.)

I would be grateful for any input and ideas.

Of varying size

Explanation:
Could it not simply be that the seats in the auditorium are of different sizes, ergo, smaller ones for cheaper tickets etc?

It could, of course, be referring to seats that can be adjusted size-wise after being installed, but this seems fairly high-tech for an auditorium of 280 seats.

neutral  philgoddard: It's not the size of the seats that's variable, it's their number.

variable-capacity

Explanation:
It refers to the number of seats. Presumably they can block off or remove seats for smaller events.

Example sentence(s):
  • La grande salle du théâtre est à jauge variable, elle pourra accueillir entre 600 et 1200 places

neutral  Martin Asplund: It does only state 280 seats in the text though, seems a bit odd all in all this sentence.

-> It means up to 280 seats.

agree  Victoria Britten: Definitely the right idea but, though your hyphen is grammatically most welcome, I find the result a bit clumsy and would prefer "of variable capacity, up to 280 seats".

variable span

Explanation:
Since the text mentions the acoustics immediatley after the "span"
