French term or phrase:Politique de la Ville
Hi all This is a text about urban housing developments and government policies. Here, it is capitalised and in other places it isn't. Have already found some possibilities on previous Kudoz entries but would like a wider opinion. The same term appears in this title which I believe oppose the two meanings of the word 'politique'. The former in the pure sense of the term and the latter meaning 'policies'???

Hi Daryo - yes, I agree with your implied meaning and have had some time to do a bit more research. This is what the govt. website says about la politique de la ville and remember I'm talking about how it was initially in the 70's. La politique de la ville désigne la politique mise en place par les pouvoirs publics afin de revaloriser les zones urbaines en difficulté et de réduire les inégalités entre les territoires. Evidently, lessons have been learned and there is now a new law forthcoming to try and make the whole thing a lot more 'intercommunale' and transversale. And should it be 'urban regeneration politics' or 'policies'? Thanks for your input
"Chronologie Politique de la ville et Politiques urbaines" as it is would mean the history of the interrelation between "Politique de la ville" and "Politiques urbaines", where
-- "Politique de la ville" is only about the actions taken to deal with "Zones Urbaine Sensibles" / deprived areas, while -- "Politiques urbaines" is about policies concerning the whole town (that would be "urban policies", although "town development policies" sound better to me)
i.e. the historical evolution of the actions taken to regenerate deprived areas as part of the policies concerning the whole town.
or in other words what is the historical evolution of the attention given to deprived areas in the town development policies.
sorry everyone for the very badly expressed question! i think that youre right Nikki and Piazza d, but this text appears to be about urban development and it's history in general (not about any specfic town) and that doesn't come acroos (IMHO) in the suggestions given.The list that follows includes both laws and policies on urban regeneration(eg. creation of ZUS etc) So on refelection maybe 'chronolgy of town politics and urban policies'
political chronology of the city and urban policy (ies).... could be a survey of the different urban policies led by the successive political parties in charge
Just seen this discussion. Well yes, the information in the question title is incomplete, and is thus misleading. However, I failed to pick this up in spite of the full version being given in the body of the post. So yes, it is "chronologie politique de la vill", an adjective, not a noun. Which changes everything.
Hi Petitavoine, I think this describes the 'politique de la ville' from the 1980s onwards with the setting up of the Programme National pour la Rénovation Urbaine( PNRU). The text makes a comparison between the old system and the new. However, that doesn't solve the problem of translating "Chronologie Politique de la ville et Politiques urbaines"??? thanks for thinking so hard about this - I know how annoying these things are until you find the right answer!!!

Chronologie Politique de la ville et Politiques urbaines = Chronologie of both Politique de la ville (government policies seeking to correct all sorts of "imbalances" / on the whole - transversally / globally - Daryo) AND Urban policY (aménagement urbain, etc.).

politique de la ville = government/state policies, as you said - à partir de la fin des années 80. Auparavant, cela pouvait être le maire qui soit plutôt au premier plan. The list that follows this title "Chronologie Politique de la ville et Politiques urbaines" is really a chronological list of laws (I don't think that they are by-laws) that came into being and the development of the PNRU (programme national de rénovation urbaine) so I think 'chronology' should stay. Wiki says 'un ensemble d'actions de l'Etat français...' Political chronology of town and urban policies????? Doesn't really make much sense to me. all thoughts welcome

Which suggests a different meaning intended? Maybe the political calendar of the town and its urban policies? Just a thought.
I mean sometimes the term appears like this "Historique de la politique de la ville" and sometimes 'Politique' is capitalised as in the example I gave earlier. Both are section titles. It might be a mistake in the text? But I'm thinking maybe when it's capitalised it means 'politics' and when it's not it means 'policies'? Does that make sense?
What do you mean, here it is capitalized? Where? We need the context sentence. It seems like policies would be the appropriate translation in your title example.
