after a nice dinner out, I thought about the situation where, say in your naval contexts, you have three 'addenda' that are regs and standards, and two 'schedules' that are more 'specific requirements' (or similar). There, I won't argue they should be called annex 1-3 and appendix 1-2! Which says, especially in formal (as in military) contexts, there is certainly 'leeway' for these terms to be used interchangeably.

Still, for us mortals in more everyday situations, I see appendix used more often... which seems to have satisfied our profdoc friend... thx for the pts!!

In my illogical 'disagree' with the other answers, I was trying to emphasise what we used in the industry I worked in. We also used Annex to cover "'Särskilda bestämmelser' -- describing the condition of the premises, who pays for installing the telephone lines,..." when appropriate, such as when our installations were to take place in different, or different types of, sites.
I realise that it is not always possible for the translator to find out what is familiar to the client, but this should be considered.

applicable to different situations. Appendix works in situations where annex works, but annex does not, IMHO, work for appendix. The 'interesting read' provided by Christian provides a discussion of the difference between the two. I've seen this differentiation in many definitions.

In Michael's example using ELSÄK, this is a straightforward example of where Annex is ok. The ELSÄK regulations are issued by a regulatory authority (separate from the contracting parties). These regs 'stand on their own' with a significance and meaning the contracting parties have nothing to say about. So, appending regs and standards established by third parties (as in electrical installation or construction), is where you can use the word annex, tho here, appendix is also perfectly ok.

When, on the other hand you have parties entering a lease agreement for office space, who are defining specific information related to the lease (as in 'Särsklid bestämmelser' -- describing the condition of the premises, who pays for installing the telephone lines, and who pays for cleaning the bathrooms), 'appendix' is the correct way to refer to these extra contract specific terms.

I've seen translated contracts that incorrectly used annex. This fits with the other research I've seen on that one.
