Russel, I suggest you have a look at Marostica Castle. I believe you have a better answer than mine.
Cangrande II della Scalafece costruire un nuovo castello, ovvero il Castello Superiore, dominante le valli collinari e tutta la pianura. La funzione del Castello Superiore doveva essere soprattutto di presidio del circondario. Proprio per questo la sua struttura è possente, con poco spazio abitativo ma tante opere militari a partire dalle quattro torri perimetrali, fino al torrione centrale.

Gian is right with his description. In English mediaeval castles the "torre" is called a "keep" usually situated on a a "motte" or raised mound with outer defensive walls. The space between the keep and the walls is called a "bailey". Something of this description is simply called "a castle" in English or sometimes "a motte and bailey castle". Any reference to the outer walls would just be made as a full description.

Thank you for the reference, Gian. So it could be a fortified tower/ wall tower. I have just found this: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torre_muraria and I am wondering if it's the same.
