of course, there is the humorous side. You can complain about it, pretend it isn't there, you can disapprove of it, but in the end the unpleasant problem is still there looking you in the face. The term isn't used to offend here.

but if you tone it down, it is no longer an accurate translation but, a rewrite, a translation of a toned down version.

I found the same in the dictionary, but I doubt my client would accept such a literal translation. I believe that in such case as this we need to go with something close to the original term but maybe a little less offensive.

and perhaps should not be translated with one. To the native English reader it conjures up a vivid picture of a "pezzo di merda" or "stronzo" on the table. It should just perhaps have been tagged as possibly offensive. As opposed to "stronzo" which is used much more in the figurative sense (in my opinion), this term is perhaps used equally or even more in the literal sense than the figurive.
