“Si on ne s’intéresse que à l’orientation d’un plan (et pas à sa position), il suffit de deux paramètres pour la décrire totalement : un paramètre pour son orientation en carte (azimuth, strike) et un pour son pendage (dip). Ces paramètres sont des angles.
L’azimuth peut se mesurer de deux façons différentes :
 Angle de la ligne de plus grande pente avec le Nord (dip direction) ;
 Angle d’une horizontale avec le Nord (strike direction).
Le pendage se mesure comme un angle avec l’horizontale (90° = vertical) ; comme on ne dispose alors que d’un angle entre 0 et 90°, il faut aussi préciser « de quel coté » se situe le pendage.”
