Paper manufacturers only managed to keep up with the demand from
growing businesses, the needs of advertisers and faster printing methods
by diversifying from cotton and linen fibres into alternative esparto grass
and wood pulp. When the wood-pulp method was first discovered in
the late 1840s (simultaneously in Germany and Canada) the fibres were
broken down by mechanical means, but in the 1870s a chemical method
was introduced using both sulphurous acids and salts. There were hidden
penalties to this process which are only now becoming apparent, for
it left the paper acidic, a fact accentuated by changes in the way paper
had been sized from 1840 onwards. A chemical formulae of ALUM AND ROSIN was frequently substituted for gelatin sizing. Unfortunately the two
substances produce sulphuric acid in reaction to each other, and as the
sizing was done in the pulping tub the acid was distributed throughout the
paper and not just on its surface.
