in any public thoroughfare (even the chimneys have not escaped),
but is covered with posters and bills of all descriptions, from the modest
single sheet to the unblushing, self-asserting, eight and twenty’.

Non saprei, sul fatto che suoni male in italiano concordo, per l'effettivo significato, invece, non avendo mai trovato clothing con il significato che dici tu continuo a propendere per la mia ipotesi, però non mi sentirei di escludere la tua al 100%

Asker: sì, però mi suona male, clothing significa anche rivestimenti, potrebbero essere pitture murali? certo un modo strano per esprimersi....
