French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Transport / Transportation / Shipping / Big crane
French term or phrase: portique à vis
A big crane-like structure used for loading and unloading ships.

I posted this one http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/construction_civ... a while back, but it's the "vis" bit is confusing me this time. Yes, hopefully it does have the odd screw holding it together!

gantry crane with a screw luffing mechanism

Explanation:
A bit tenuous, this suggestion (hence the low confidence level), but there are screw mechanisms for keeping the crane hook at a constant level (luffing) on a gantry crane.

Example sentence(s):
  • ...screw-type gantry crane luffing mechanism, able to provide more accurate and safer luffing arm action when the door frame work of luffing crane [probably a machine translation from Chinese].
