Russian term or phrase:

Anything I can think of at the moment comes out labored and patently unnatural. I don't expect anything particularly idiomatic to be available for this, but maybe some of you native folks out there could suggest a lesser evil?

thoughts meander far afield
Explanation:
THE BEATLES - ACROSS THE UNIVERSE LYRICS
mages of broken light, which
Dance before me like a million eyes,
They call me on and on across the universe.
Thoughts meander like a
Restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, sir, so far this comes the closest to what I think this means here. It's the narrator's thoughts that go far afield, it is him who is speculating and still finds himself unable to figure what's on the young lady's mind. It has nothing to do with the girl's mental state. Thoughts meander far afield is a great way of putting it, but I'll save that for my own writing. It's just a little... um... sophisticated for the kind of text I am translating. The mind wanders off, or the mind travels far, that's more like it. Thanks again for giving me a great idea.

Her mind distant

Explanation:
The particulars depend on how you're structuring the rest of that paragraph, but something around the simple image of a distant mind.

thoughts trail off/trail away into the distance

Explanation:
"(His) thoughts trail off into the distance but the reason for her sadness remains a mystery to him."

Or "As his thoughts trail away into the distance, he tries to comprehend what's making her so sad but does not find a solution."

example: the husband says to his wife, as his thoughts trail off in the distance on a metaphoric path I confess I wanted to follow as far away from this pair as I could possibly get.

her mind/her thoughts seemed to be elsewhere

Explanation:
Как вариант прочтения оригинала (НЕ вариант перевода)):
her mind seemed to be elsewhere (hence he couldn't figure out what this belle/this beauty of a girl was preoccupied with).

P.S. Я на 99% уверена, что речь о "далеко вьющихся мыслях" героини, не рассказчика, бо это именно она строчкой выше описана как то ли “мечтательная”, то ли “в тревожных размышлениях”. Сам же рассказчик "пытается настроиться на ее волну, синхронизироваться", но это отдаленным блужданием мыслей назвать сложно. ИМХО, как и обычно ))

(cont'd)
По логике вещей, мысли самого рассказчика никоим образом не могут виться/блуждать вдалеке в то время, когда все они сосредоточены непосредственно на предмете рассказа (и попытках синхронизации с мыслями оного ;))

Example sentence(s):
  • She glanced over at Sherese, but her thoughts seemed to be elsewhere as she stared out of the passenger side window.
  • She hummed in response, but her mind seemed to be elsewhere. But where was the question.

agree  Alexander Kozhukhov: it's her thoughts, not his. Отличное пояснение по поводу "вьющихся" мыслей - о себе рассказчик вряд ли стал бы так говорить. :)

thoughts travel far, or fly to remote places

Explanation:
You can change the tense or the form slightly, but this should be it. It does not refer to her thoughts, in a particular.
