Hello

I would be grateful if someone could suggest a good way of rendering this term in English. The context is the rating scale for employees as part of the annual appraisal:

compétence non maîtrisée
compétence partiellement maîtrisée
compétence maîtrisée
très bonne maîtrise de la competence
expertise

I have been juggling with "unsatisfactory", "partially satisfactory", "satisfactory" etc.

neutral  Tony M: Trouble is, this sits awkwardly with 'some particular skill', and in EN, skilled / unskilled labour as such a specific connotation, I'm not sure this would be wise. / But 'typing: unskilled' would be risible.

  -> That was my initial thought, but uses such as "skilled/unskilled in carpentry/motor mechanics (and, indeed, typing), etc.", though not as widespread as the familiar, general use, are not uncommon, not illogical and quite permissible.

agree  Tony M: This is what I thought of too, though it may make some of the other list items slightly awkward; and i'm not entirely sure about using 'skill' (without seeing the whole list). / Yes, I've encountered this in HR contexts.

  -> Thanks Tony. I think this is terminology commonly used in education and training. Skills can be acquired, not acquired, partially acquired etc.

neutral  Tony M: I feel this word order would make the rest of the list awkward; at best, it would work as 'skill mastered', but it's still pretty clunky...
