I'm tempted to translate this as bozos just for lack of any other way to render тип, but I'm not sure if it's too informal.

A former landowner is watching her belongings be inventoried after the invasion of Bessarabia.

As in a few of those characters were doing this or that. That's what I'd use, and BTW this is a rare case where there's almost a one to one correspondence in meaning. Of course, your bozos work perfectly well too.

agree  Rachel Douglas: I think the other proposals are too crude. "Character" is so close, it overrides "fellows," "guys," "chaps" (BE). Would avoid "bozo" - culturally specific and maybe anachronistic. Original c. 1910 maybe from Spanish "bozal," then Bozo the Clown in 1940.

neutral  Rachel Douglas: Please allow me to continue my campaign against the false friend "вариант-variant." In English, a "variant" is something that slightly varies some already established idea. Here, you have not a "variant," but an "option," "version," "choice," "proposal."
