Hi, I am helping a friend translate his dissertation from Italian into English. There is a compound noun which to me can be translated in two similar ways. I have put the Italian compound noun between quotation marks in the Italian sentence, and the whole sentence translated into English with the two translation proposals of the noun in quotation marks separated by a backward slash.

Stavo giusto pensando al modo di noi uomini dì usare l'intelletto, a me dispiace se la verità è amara, cioè sapere da altri che l'uomo per arrivare al ''nesso delle cose'' debba per forza girarci attorno.

I was just thinking of how we the people use intellect, and I'm sorry if the truth is unpleasant. I mean it came out man must necessarily try to make several attempts before understanding ''the person-thing relation'' / '' the relation between people and things''.
