English term or phrase: last statement
Michelangelo’s other small inscriptions – the lettered signature on
his Pietà of 1499 in St Peter’s Basilica, carved on the ribbon that holds
the Virgin’s cloak, and the setting for an inscription on the pediment he
created for a statue of Marcus Aurelius in 1538 – indicate the direction
his successors will follow. The lettering on the base of Marcus Aurelius’s
statue (now housed in Rome’s Capitoline Museum) is placed upon
a curved background. Bending the lines of lettering, placing them on
illusionistic creations of cloth or shields, casting them in bronze, gilding
them, infilling them with black pitch – these will be the stock in trade of
the baroque letter-carver. Such lettered monuments would incorporate
the dead into the walls and aisles of churches across Italy and spread
their marble pallor slowly northwards. But Michelangelo’s LAST STATEMENT
echoes down the succeeding centuries, it tears underground through a
long dark tunnel towards the twentieth century, above ground, baroque
and rococo letters trill: a flourish of silver trumpets.

Explanation:

his successors will follow"

ultima epigrafe

Explanation:
Ciao.
36 in http://books.google.it/books?id=0fStAAAAQBAJ&pg=PT124&lpg=PT... e visto che "The term epigraph describes a brief statement" e che una epigraph è "An inscription, as on a statue or building", credo che
"ultima epigrafe"
No one will have the courage to develop this stark prophetic simplicity until the early twentieth century")
potrebbe andare bene.
Buon lavoro.
