(experimental) (trial) plots Explanation: Lots of hits for Praxisschläge (457) and for Praxisschlag (575) Small pieces of land reserved for field trials of new strains, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers etc. Often seen in fields on roadsides - several strips separated off from one another with a sign planted at the end of each strip showing which strain is being grown. (split plots). German text indicating the size of a Praxisschlag/plot: "So stellten wir mehr zufällig auf einem 10 ha großen Praxisschlag eine sehr hohe Verseuchung durch Heterodera avenae nach mehrjährigem Anbau von Deutschem Weidelgras fest." English text with plots: As part of a set of trials that had been conducted since 2002 to control two-spotted spider mites in hops by the use of predatory mites, another trial was run during the 2007 field season. Eight experimental plots (c. 470 m2 with 250 trainings, respectively) had been laid out in a conventionally managed hop garden (location Buch, cv. Hallertauer Tradition) in the Hallertau region, Bavaria, Germany. "In four plots predatory mites were released on 1 June and 13 June, and four control plots were left untreated." The word "trainings" is correct - this is how hops are grown. BTW: the Bundessortenamt is about 10 minutes walk from my office - they have lots of small plots for testing new strains. You will find the word plots in this context as trial plots, experimental plots, control plots and, when several plots are together in one field, as split plots. split plots are particularly important, for instance, in investigating the spread of beneficial insects like predatory mites from one plot to the others.
