Arabic term or phrase: نعم، عندي گطيعة في ظهري.
Greeting fellow translators,

What would be the best translation of the phrase ( نعم، عندي گطيعة في ظهري. ) into English?

Here is the context:

The doctor asked this question to the client: Do you have any other medical problems ?
The patient replied in Arabic: نعم، عندي گطيعة في ظهري.
‘andi gaTee’a fii Dhahri.

The patient also mentioned in relation to his reply (دم فاسد في ظهره) and that this problem is related to lifting heavy weight in Sudan. Because he could not speak MSA (well), he could not say what he meant using the Modern Standard Arabic when I requested from him to say that in MSA.

I appreciate all your help and please provide explanation/comments. And what does the word (گطيعة) in Sudanese Arabic mean in the first place?

Thank you!

Asker: Thanks a lot Linda for your suggested translation. I am still confused about the correct translation in this context. Would it be MUSCLE STRAIN IN MY BACK or BLOOD LETTING IN MY BACK as suggested by our colleage Doaa. The patient was referring to both things in the course of conversation. Any further helpful comments? Thanks.

Asker: Thanks so much for your help, Linda!

bloodletting in my back

Explanation:

Taking history of one of my patients, I heard this term too but he was from Iraq actually.

bloodletting is also called cupping sometime.

Thanks Hytham for your note. I was also confused my the brilliant answer from Linda, but I thought, medically, bloodletting can cause muscle strain feeling if cuts are made in the cervical vertebra area of the back.

However, muscle strains do not cause decadent blood دم فاسد that needs bloodletting. Decadent blood is a cumulative result of metabolic reactions inside the body.

Asker: Thanks for your suggested translation, Doaa. I am still perplexed about the correct translation considering the fact that the patient mentioned both bloodletting in the back and a problem with the back related to heavy weight lifting. What do you think is the connection between the two that he was implying? I appreciate your further comments!

Asker: Many thanks, Doaa! I appreciate the detailed explanation you made.
